Reddit IP Ban or Shadowban? Check Network Blocks and Account Status
A Reddit network-security block is not the same as an account ban, a community ban or a spam restriction. Start with the exact message and the affected action. A public IP lookup or third-party shadowban check cannot read Reddit’s private account decisions.
Start with the evidence
- Read the account notice and inbox before changing network settings.
- Missing posts can have several causes; a public-profile test is evidence, not a definitive shadowban result.
- Reddit’s October 2026 builder policy applies to bots and AI agents as well as conventional applications.
Identify the restriction you can actually observe
| Evidence | What it establishes | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Account ban notice | An account enforcement decision | Read the notice and appeal instructions |
| Password-reset/security notice | An account security flow | Use official recovery |
| One community is unavailable for posting | A community-specific restriction may apply | Read its message and contact its moderators |
| Posts or profile unexpectedly missing | Possible moderation or spam filtering | Review notices and official spam guidance |
| Network-security page | This request was denied | Capture the page and examine the runtime |
| API error from a data job | An integration failed | Check approval, credentials and response details |
Record the message, URL, timestamp and whether you were signed in. Include the action that failed: opening a page, submitting a comment, sending chat or calling an API. Keep a screenshot with personal messages and tokens removed.
Reddit’s account-status overview, updated March 2026, distinguishes rules-based bans, security locks and possible spam flags. A security lock calls for the account-recovery instructions; a ban notice points to the reason and appeal. Neither should be diagnosed solely from the public IP address.
For an access page that says a request was blocked by network security, preserve the page’s instructions. We did not find a public Reddit document that exposes the complete classifier or gives a universal clearance test. Do not label every such page a permanent IP ban.
Use the account notice and official appeal route
Reddit’s ban guidance, updated October 2, 2026, says the inbox notification provides the reason and, for a temporary ban, its duration. Preserve that notice and follow its review route. Do not replace a displayed duration with a generic claim that every restriction expires after a fixed number of hours.
If only one community is involved, keep that context in the request to its moderators. A sitewide account decision and a community’s participation decision have different owners. Sending an IP screenshot without the moderation notice is unlikely to help either one understand the case.
Reddit’s ban-evasion explanation, updated October 8, describes returning to a banned community through another account as ban evasion. A new connection is not a substitute for resolving the participation restriction. Keep the appeal factual: identify the affected account, the notice and the reason you believe the decision needs review.
What a Reddit shadowban checker can and cannot tell you
Reddit’s spam and inauthentic-activity help says unexpected invisibility of posts, comments, messages or the profile may indicate a flag. It directs affected users to sign in and use the official appeals page if the action was mistaken.
A public checker usually observes whether a profile or item is retrievable. That observation is narrower than an account verdict. An unavailable request, removed item or failed lookup does not reveal the full reason. A checker also cannot guarantee that every community will display your next post.
If you inspect public visibility, use an existing public item and record its URL and result. Avoid publishing repeated test posts across unrelated communities. Compare the observation with the account’s notices and the official appeal screen. If the evidence conflicts, describe the conflict in support rather than treating one third-party result as authoritative.
This guide does not offer a hidden-status scanner. Our IP lookup identifies a connection; it cannot inspect Reddit’s account systems.
Separate a connection problem from a participation decision
For ordinary access, check whether the issue affects the official app, the website or a particular integration. A browser that works while a server-side job fails tells you to investigate those environments separately. It does not prove that the account is unrestricted everywhere.
Record the public address from the failing environment where possible. If the browser uses a local proxy but the job runs in a cloud container, the two requests may leave through different networks. The browser setup guide and Linux guide explain how to check configuration at the right layer.
Where your access policy permits, one comparison on another ordinary network can help isolate a connection fault. Keep the account and client unchanged. Stop if the service presents an account review or verification flow. Do not rotate through a pool of addresses to continue a denied operation.
The useful result is specific: “The same page failed in this browser on this network at this time.” It is not a claim that an entire ISP is banned. Keep that distinction when reporting a suspected shared-IP problem to the network operator.
What changed for Reddit bots and AI agents in October 2026
Reddit’s Responsible Builder Policy, updated October 5, 2026, requires explicit approval before accessing Reddit data through the API. It includes bots, AI agents and other non-human tools in its app rules. Developers are directed toward Devvit and the documented request route for unsupported use cases; commercial data use requires written approval.
Check that the actual use case matches the approval. Do not assume an old example script, an API key or an MCP connector authorizes a new collection job. The policy also prohibits circumventing limits and using multiple accounts or duplicate requests to obtain the same access.
Before enabling an agent, write down the approved purpose, application identity, requested data and operating limits. Keep credentials in the runtime’s secret store. Ask the agent to report failures with the route and status, not to change identities until a request succeeds.
An AI summary can help an operator read a redacted error report. It cannot establish API approval or reverse a moderation decision. If a workflow needs broader access, resolve that with Reddit before resuming collection.
Build a report that support can act on
Use a short report with four parts: the affected action, the exact response, the account notice if one exists, and the configuration change immediately before the failure. Add a timestamp and time zone so an operator can correlate logs.
For an API job, include the application identifier, runtime and response status, with tokens removed. For the website, include the URL and browser version. For a community restriction, include the community and the notice rather than unrelated network logs.
Keep the report focused on one event. Record each configuration change, since changing the network and client together makes the cause harder to isolate. Once the relevant owner provides a correction or review outcome, retest the original action once and record the result.
