A copy can be perfect and still lack the one thing that matters: having been somewhere.
Benjamin noticed it about paintings a century ago. A reproduction can match the original stroke for stroke and still be missing its presence in time and space — the fact of having existed at a particular place. He called what was missing the aura, and observed that it is precisely the part that does not survive copying.
Networks have arrived at the same problem from the other direction. Any machine can copy the form of a human request: the headers, the timing, the mouse jitter, the browser fingerprint. All of it is reproducible, and the cost of reproducing it falls every year. What cannot be reproduced is the origin — a packet that genuinely left a phone attached to a carrier tower, sharing an address with thousands of ordinary subscribers who are also just checking their messages.
Borges imagined cartographers whose map grew until it covered the empire point for point, and was therefore useless. We are close to the version of that story where the map is the traffic: synthetic requests so faithful to human ones that fidelity stops being evidence of anything. When the copy is indistinguishable, the only remaining question is not what does this look like but where did it actually come from.
Which returns us to Weil, writing in 1943 about people rather than packets: rootedness is the need we notice least and lose most easily. It turns out to describe infrastructure too. The scarce thing on a network of perfect copies is a real address, in a real place, with a real person's SIM in it.

What we actually operate
The moat is physical, which is why it is slow to build and hard to copy.
Anything that can be provisioned by API can be provisioned by a competitor tomorrow. A SIM in a device in a country is a physical fact that takes time, money and a person to create — the inconvenience is the defensibility.
A device, not a region
Every proxy is a physical 4G or 5G modem or phone with a carrier SIM in it, sitting in somebody’s home or rack. There is no virtualisation layer where a datacenter could be substituted.
A real tower
Traffic egresses through the carrier’s own network, so the address belongs to the mobile operator’s pool — the same pool assigned to ordinary handsets in that country.
Shared with real people
Carrier-grade NAT places thousands of ordinary subscribers behind the same public address. That crowd is the point: it cannot be reduced to one suspicious actor.
Owned by someone
Hardware belongs to independent operators who host it and are paid for it. Supply is a relationship with a person, not a line item on a cloud bill.
