Reddit Account Warm-Up Plan
Reddit does not publish a warm-up schedule, and there is no fixed number of days that unlocks an account. What exists are community gates set by moderators, such as minimum karma and account age, and a site-wide Contributor Quality Score that moderators can filter on. A warm-up is simply a few weeks of genuine participation that clears those gates.
The short version
- Karma reflects the votes your posts and comments receive, but it is not a simple one-to-one count of upvotes.
- Karma and account-age minimums are set by each community's moderators, often through AutoModerator, and many keep the numbers private.
- Moderators can filter by Contributor Quality Score, which Reddit says draws on account history, network and location signals and account security.
- Reddit Rule 2 asks you to participate authentically and not to spam or manipulate content. Vote manipulation and ban evasion with extra accounts are enforced.
- Verify your email, use one steady connection per account, and comment before you post links.
What Reddit says about new accounts
Start with the Reddit Rules. Rule 2 asks you to abide by community rules, participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and not spam or engage in disruptive behavior, including content manipulation. Rule 5 asks you to be authentic: you do not need your real name, but you must not mislead others or impersonate someone. Enforcement ranges from a warning to account suspension.
Reddit's help center explains karma as a reflection of the upvotes and downvotes your posts and comments receive, and notes it is not a simple one-to-one relationship with votes. There is post karma and comment karma, shown separately on your profile.
Reddit's help article on disrupting communities covers the behavior that gets accounts actioned: using multiple accounts or coordinated groups to change vote counts, automated karma schemes, and creating accounts to get around a moderator ban or a site-wide suspension. Several accounts are not banned in themselves; using them to act as more than one person in the same conversation is.
Karma and subreddit thresholds
| Gate | Set by | Visible to you |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum karma to post or comment | Each community's moderators | Sometimes in the rules or sidebar |
| Minimum account age | Each community's moderators | Sometimes in the rules or sidebar |
| Contributor Quality Score filter | Moderators, using Reddit's score | No; the score is not shown |
| Site-wide suspension | Reddit administrators | Yes, by message |
For new accounts, much of the friction comes from individual communities rather than from Reddit itself. Moderators use AutoModerator, Reddit's rule engine for communities, to remove or hold posts from authors below a karma or account-age threshold. Those thresholds differ per community, and many moderators keep them private so spam operators cannot aim for them.
Since September 2023, moderators can also use the Contributor Quality Score. In the r/modnews announcement, Reddit described CQS as an internal classification that helps spot likely spammers, built from signals such as past account actions, network and location signals, and whether the account is secured, for example with a verified email. Accounts fall into five tiers, from lowest to highest, and moderators reference it in AutoModerator as contributor_quality. Reddit does not show users their own score or publish the formula.
Two consequences for a warm-up:
- A post that disappears without a message may have been filtered by an AutoModerator rule, not by Reddit. Check the community's rules and sidebar first.
- Network and location signals are part of CQS. An account that signs in from a different country every day, or from an address shared with many throwaway accounts, works against itself.
A week-by-week plan
This plan has no hidden thresholds behind it; it is what a genuine new member does, spread out so moderators and filters see a normal history.
Week 1. Verify the email and turn on two-factor authentication. Join a handful of communities about things you actually know. Read the rules of each. Leave a few useful comments a day in large, beginner-friendly communities.
Week 2. Keep commenting, now with longer answers where you have real knowledge. Upvote what you find useful. Reply to replies. Do not post links yet.
Week 3. Make your first text posts: a question, a guide or an experience, in communities whose rules allow new members to post. Check whether they stay visible from a logged-out browser.
Week 4 and after. Start posting in your target communities, following each one's self-promotion rules. A common moderator rule of thumb is that only a small share of your activity should point at your own site; check each community's rule, since many state their own ratio.
At any point, if posts vanish, stop and diagnose before posting more. The Reddit shadowban and network block check explains how to tell a filtered post from an account or network problem.
Network and device consistency
Because CQS uses network and location signals, the connection is part of an account's history. Keep it boring:
- One account, one browser profile or app install, one steady connection. Do not sign in to two accounts that take part in the same communities from the same IP; that is the pattern vote-manipulation checks look for.
- Stay in one country. Sign-ins that jump between countries look like a compromised account.
- Avoid shared VPN exits and hosting addresses. Many unrelated users and automated accounts sit behind them.
- Do not rotate the IP during a session. A new address every few minutes is not normal for a person.
A dedicated mobile line gives one account a steady carrier IP in one country that no other Coronium customer uses. It changes only when you press the button, call the API, open the rotation link or set a timer, so leave the timer off for account work. See mobile proxies for Reddit for the line options.
A steady connection does not replace genuine participation. It only stops the network from adding noise to an otherwise normal history.
Mistakes that undo a warm-up
- Posting links in week one. Many communities filter new accounts that post links, and repeated removals add to the account's history.
- Karma farming in low-effort communities. It builds a number, not a credible profile, and some moderators look at where karma came from.
- Upvoting your own posts from another account. That is vote manipulation under Reddit's rules, whatever network each account uses.
- Copying the same comment across communities. It reads as spam to people and to filters.
- Ignoring removals. A removed post is information; read the community rules and adjust before trying again.
- Uploading the same video from several accounts at once. The multi-account video upload guide explains how Reddit treats repeated media.
Sources and review scope
Sources reviewed October 30, 2026. Platform rules were read on each platform's own help center, terms or policy pages, and every citation names the page. Platforms rewrite these pages without notice, so check the linked source before acting on it. A separate network line removes one linking signal; it is not a promise that an account will never be restricted, because each platform enforces its own rules.

Where to get a dedicated line
A Coronium mobile proxy is one physical device with its own SIM, rented to one customer. It connects over HTTP or SOCKS5, the IP changes by dashboard button, API link or timer, and data is not metered on dedicated lines. Brazil lines are the exception: 20 GB of data a month and a new IP on request only, with no timer. Stock and prices differ by country and carrier.
